CSM, Community Build Endurance for Warrior Dash, May 19-20
Getting fit is more fun when exercises are varied and you are joined by likeminded peopleor as in the case of Rodrekia Johnson of Nanjemoyjoined by fellow warriors in training for the Warrior Dash to benefit St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Johnson, who is studying to be a phlebotomy technician at the College of Southern Maryland, began training in February for Marylands Warrior Dash along with 15 other CSM employees and members of the community.
The competition, which will occur on May 19 and 20 at Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, combines running three miles on a course wet down to create a thick, muddy trail with obstacles that require jumping over junk cars, climbing cargo nets over 15-foot walls, rappelling a steep ravine and sloshing down a slippery slope.
The training works on building the muscle strength and endurance they will need to conquer the run and the obstacles they will face on race day, said CSM Fitness Coordinator Jane Pomponio.
I always wanted to work out and this training looked like it would be fun. It has also made me feel more energetic, said Johnson.
Warrior Dash training is held 12 to 1 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays at the La Plata Campus and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays at the Leonardtown Campus up to the event. CSMs Fitness Passport participants may register for Warrior Dash Training or any of the other classes on that schedule for one price. Other fitness classes in the Passport group include cardio kickboxing, Pilates, spinning, super circuit, total body pump and Hatha yoga.
