Vietnam Veteran, CSM Professor to Share Work, Feb. 28

Wayne Karlin to Present at Connections Reading

As part of the College of Southern Maryland’s Spring Connections Series and its year-long commemoration of the anniversary of the Vietnam War,  CSM Professor Wayne Karlin will discuss his book “Wandering Souls: Journeys with the Living and the Dead in Viet Nam,” beginning at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28, at the Prince Frederick Campus, Building B, Multipurpose Room.

Karlin’s book tells the true story of an American soldier returning to Vietnam to seek reconciliation with the family of a North Vietnamese soldier he killed during the war. Karlin accompanies the soldier on his journey, describing the experience from the perspectives of the American soldier and the Vietnamese family, as well as the lives of both soldiers growing up and in the war, and, for the American soldier, in the aftermath of the war.

Originally from New York City, Karlin served in Vietnam as a Marine and was awarded numerous decorations including the Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Medal and the Combat Air Crew Badge. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees following his honorable discharge and he has written many acclaimed books, short stories and essays. His books include “Marble Mountain,” “The Wished-For Country,” “Rumors and Stones,” “Crossover,”  “Prisoners” and “War Movies.” His essays, articles and short stories have been featured in publications including “The Baltimore Sun,” “The Washington Post,” “The Los Angeles Times” and “The Nation,” as well as many literary journals.

Karlin has received five State of Maryland Individual Artist Awards in Fiction and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts for his writing. In 1999, he shared the Paterson Prize in Fiction with Barbara Kingsolver. In 2005, he was awarded the Vietnam Veterans of America Excellence in Arts Award. Karlin has been a professor of languages and literature at CSM for more than 20 years. This summer he will be leading a travel studies program in Vietnam, with information available at ow.ly/thc2e.
