Wellness, Aquatics Center Transformed into Tropical Paradise for Fundraising Event

The College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus Wellness and Aquatics Center was transformed into a tropical paradise May 7 for the CSM Foundation's second “Splash for Scholarships” fundraiser. The event raised more than $80,990 through cash and in-kind donations in support of student scholarships, exceeding last year's total of $73,225.

The Chip Norris Scholarship, created in honor of the CSM alumnus and former Leonardtown Mayor by friends and supporters, was one of the new scholarships established through last year's “Splash” event. This year, the first-ever recipient of this award, Nicholas Combs of Leonardtown, told donors that he wouldn't be where he is today without their support.

Combs told those attending the event that in less than a year he went from being a homeschooled student, to earning his GED to being a college freshman earning a spot on CSM's Dean's List. “I come from a single-parent family where I am the oldest of seven children. I want to continue my studies to show my sisters the rewards of an education. I want to thank everyone for your generous support that enables students like me to focus on classwork without worrying about how we are going to afford tuition,” Combs said.

“What I really value is the struggle that so many of our students have to undertake to get to the college, to get onto that stage [at graduation],” said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried. “What [donors attending the event] are doing tonight is helping students achieve their dreams. I can tell you that there is never enough money for scholarships and by being here tonight, it means that more students will be supported.”

Sponsors of the event were High Tide: Community Bank of the Chesapeake and Capt. Billy Robertson Foundation;

Lifeguard: Brad and Linda Gottfried, CBIZ Benefits and Insurance Services, Inc., County Times, Glen and Barbara Ives, MedStar St. Mary's Hospital, Miles & Stockbridge, Old Line Bank, Quality Built Homes, Southern Maryland Newspapers, Southern Maryland Women's League;

Cox, Nancy Hempstead, Patuxent Dental, PixBooth, Sabre Systems, Inc. and Taylor Gas Company.
