Presentation on Marylanders in the Civil War by Author Daniel Carroll Toomey May 14

The Southern Maryland Civil War Roundtable (SMCWR) will host a presentation by noted Civil War author Daniel Carroll Toomey whose works include “The Civil War in Maryland,” “Marylanders at Gettysburg” and “The Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers’ Home.” The presentation will be at 7 p.m., May 14 at CSM’s Center for Business and Industry (BI), Chaney Enterprises Conference Room BI-113, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

Toomey has lectured for a number of historical organizations as well as for the National Park Service and the Smithsonian Institution. He has taught “The Civil War in Maryland” and has contributed to radio and television programs, and to two Civil War battle videos. Toomey is a member of the Surratt Society, the Maryland Arms Collectors Association and the Company of Military Historians. He serves on the Maryland Military Monuments Commission and was project historian for the Maryland Memorial erected in Gettysburg in 1994.

Among his many achievements, Toomey has received the Gettysburg National Battlefield Award in 1985 and the 2001 Peterkin Award, given by the National Park Service at Fort McHenry for contributions in the field of research and preservation.

Toomey is the guest curator at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum for its five-year project, “The War Came by Train” commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
