Pottery by artist Bill Schran is on display in CSMs Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery located in the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus through March 11. Schran discussed his collection during a gallery talk on Feb. 7. Schran has been a potter for 40 years, first realizing his passion after taking a ceramics class during his junior year of college and having it speak to him, he said. Schrans collection documents his progression from combining the shape of a cone and a sphere to a happy accidental breakage of a piece, which lead to him allowing his pieces to take on different shapes. As Schran continued to explore the forms, he discovered alternatives to construction. Finally, he came to an end-result with his work when a colleague suggested that the final form contain a lid. From a simple two-piece geometric form to a five-piece assemblage, his progression took shape. He is the assistant dean of fine arts and an assistant professor of fine arts and ceramics at the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in Alexandria, Va, where he has worked for 34 years. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. For information visit www.csmd.edu/Arts.
