Previous finalists from the Southern Maryland Piano Competition added some holiday notes during the recent Calvert Chamber Business After Hours hosted by the College of Southern Maryland at its Prince Frederick Campus. Christina Smith of Lexington Park and a finalist in the 2011 and 2010 competitions, shown, shared time on the college’s handcrafted Bösendorfer Grand Piano with 2010 first-place finalist Ruth Alonzo of Great Mills during the festivities. The competition is open to any high school student within Southern Maryland. High school pianists will perform on the grand piano during the competition, and finalists have opportunity during the year to also perform on the instrument for various programs. Applications are being accepted through Jan. 13 for the fourth annual competition, which will be held at the campus April 28 and 29. Expanded opportunities for high school pianists to be recognized for their talents will be available during this year’s competition.
