Leonardtown Spinning Class Adds Miles to ‘Finish Jamie’s Journey’

The death of a local athlete spurred students in a spinning class at the College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown Campus to help complete the bicyclist’s journey and in turn raise funds for cancer. Joyce Raum, of Leonardtown, was moved to action when she learned of the fatal accident of St. Mary’s College of Maryland alumna Jamie Roberts, an athlete who was in the midst of biking across the country to raise funds and awareness for cancer.

Four years ago Raum’s son Abraham had completed a similar cross-country trek from Baltimore to Seattle, and experienced a summer of personal growth, she said. Raum alerted her CSM fitness instructor Pam Brennan that there was a campaign to help Roberts ‘finish her journey,’ and the idea to involve the spinning class was born. “We posted one of the first photos on [Miles for Jamie] Facebook page following a class where we tallied 180 miles. We have been inspired individually to continue to donate miles to Jamie’s cause,” said Raum.

The Spinning class included, front from left, Ginny Demehri, Karen Russell, Robyn Young, Raum and Rush Cox, and back from left, Jeffrey Turbyne, Brennan, Tom Davis and Barbara Wolf.  Roberts had set a goal of raising $6,000 during her 4,000-mile ride. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised, and 50,000 miles has been donated in her name.
