The College of Southern Maryland revels in the season of ghosts, goblins and ghouls with its upcoming production of “Frankenstein,” which will feature the area’s young actors re-creating the suspenseful, classic tale of horror set in 19th-century Switzerland and detailing the ill-fated experiments of young Dr. Frankenstein.

After Dr. Frankenstein purchases cadavers from two unsavory grave robbers, he gives life to a creature both hideous and touching—and so physically powerful and mentally twisted that he soon brings death or destruction to all who stand in his way. Adhering more closely to the original novel than did the famous motion picture versions, CSM’s performance blends moments of brooding terror and sudden shock with questions of morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry.
“Frankenstein” is written by Victor Gialanella, based on the infamous horror novel by Mary Shelley who first published the book in 1818. Marking its 200th anniversary, the story has been modified for all kinds of performances, from the theater to the big screen to television over and over again. It has become an iconic model of horror stories and science fiction. Gialanella’s play, as presented by CSM Children’s Theatre, was first published in 1982.
The performances will be Oct. 25, 26 and 27 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and seniors and $5 for ages high school and younger.
“Frankenstein” is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc.
