The 24th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Breakfast, presented by the National Congress of Black Women, Calvert County Chapter (NCBW), will host Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown as the celebrations keynote speaker, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 18 at the Rod & Reel Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach.
Coinciding with the national celebration of the birth of the late civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Calvert Countys annual community event is unique in that it enables African American children from throughout Calvert County to attend the breakfast and interact with the regions leaders, explained NCBW Calvert County Chapter President Kimberly Mason. Sponsors for this years breakfast include the College of Southern Maryland and the Calvert County Branch of the NAACP.
The continued generosity of our sponsors through these many years has ensured that the National Congress of Black Women in Calvert County is able to arrange for as many children as possible to attend this event, Mason said. It is such a privilege for these youngsters to be able to meet and talk with our local leaders, and even more special is to be able to provide the experience for them to interact with Lt. Governor Anthony Brown at this years event.
Serving as Marylands eighth lieutenant governor, Brown was previously a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served as the Majority Whip. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Prince Georges Community College prior to being elected a state delegate. A graduate of Harvard College, Brown was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army, serving a tour of duty in Germany as a helicopter pilot with the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. He continues to serve as a colonel in the United States Army Reserves, commanding the 153rd Legal Support Organization.
