Emergency Drill Scheduled at La Plata Campus, May 2

Local EMS Responders, Vehicles Expected on CSM Campus

The College of Southern Maryland will hold a simulated emergency exercise as part of an evaluation scenario for the college’s healthcare students from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 2 on the La Plata Campus. Local fire, emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies will be staged on campus, working with students to facilitate their learning and to simulate the exercise with fire and rescue vehicles and equipment during the exercise.

“This simulation will provide the opportunity for students to put their knowledge into practice,” said Associate Professor and EMS Program Coordinator John Gosford, who anticipates more than 100 students to be involved.

The drill will include CSM paramedic program students practicing their skills in treating simulated patients and interacting with local agencies, as well as CSM nursing, medical lab technician and health information management students simulating an emergency room and medical lab.

This simulation scenario will involve using high-fidelity simulation manikins and other volunteers for students to practice their ability to triage, simulate treatment and arrange for transport. During the exercise, fire and rescue vehicles will be on campus in Parking Lot 2 with rooms designated in the Francis P. Chiaramonte MD Center for Science and Technology, the James C. Mitchell Center for Health Technology and the Center for Business and Industry as simulation areas for testing students.
