Dr. Thomas Jarvis to Lecture on Causes of Civil War

Historian to Discuss Various Historical Interpretations at CSM

The Southern Maryland Civil War Roundtable will feature a presentation by history professor Dr. Thomas Jarvis on the causes of the Civil War at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Center for Business and Industry (BI) on the La Plata Campus. The roundtable is open to anyone interested in the Civil War.

“This is an issue that continues to be the source of much discussion and debate, with strong feelings regarding what on the surface may seem like a simple question,” said SMCWR President Dr. Brad Gottfried, who is CSM’s president. “However, great events in history, such as the outbreak of a war, are usually the result of a complex series of causes. We all know that the attack on Fort Sumter started the bloodiest war in U.S. history, but there were numerous long-term issues between the North and South that increased tensions, leading to warfare,” Gottfried said.

Jarvis will discuss various historical interpretations regarding the outbreak of the Civil War, review issues that caused sectional tensions, and categorize general causes of the war.  He will also lead those present on a spirited discussion of timely issues related to the topic.

Jarvis taught history as a professorial instructor at American University in Washington, D.C. and as a member of the adjunct faculty at CSM, where he developed and taught two specialty courses: “The History of American Warfare” and “The U.S. and Twentieth Century World Affairs.” He has a bachelor’s degree in history from Stony Brook University, N.Y., a master’s degree from the School of International Service, American University, and a Ph.D. in U.S. history from American University. Jarvis served three years in the U.S. Army, working in the intelligence field with the Army Security Agency. He retired from the Central Intelligence Agency as a senior executive.
