The College of Southern Maryland welcomes contemporary folk and pop artist, Tom Chapin to perform at 8 p.m., Jan. 10 at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.
Chapin has produced both adult and childrens albums, all of which have entertained, amused and enlightened audiences of all ages with life-affirming original songs told in a sophisticated array of musical styles.
Chapin has also gained widespread acclaim for his recordings aimed at 4 11-year-olds and their families. His family albums have been recognized with awards from the American Library Association, Parents Choice, the New York Music Award and the National Association of Parenting Publications and Parents Magazine. Five of his family recordings have received Grammy nominations for Best Musical Album for Children. Billboard magazine calls Chapin the best family artist around.
Elementary school teachers across North American have incorporated Chapins songs into their curriculum, finding them accessible and adaptable to classroom study and interaction.
Chapins varied career has taken him to Broadway as the lead in the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes as well as off-Broadway as musical director of both Cotton Patch Gospel and Harry Chapin: Lies and Legends. Chapin was also a host on the ABC television series Make a Wish, and the documentary series National Geographic Explorer.
In addition to his musical career, Chapin is on the Board of Directors of World Hunger Year, a hunger organization founded in 1975 by Chapins late brother, singer, songwriter and humanitarian Harry Chapin.
