CSM Presents 11th Annual Jazz Festival, April 4-5

Festival Features Workshops, Performances with Trumpeter Bobby Shew

Area high school jazz bands will show off their chops when they kick off the College of Southern Maryland’s 11th Annual Jazz Festival, April 4 with a jazz clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center. World renowned and multiple Grammy Award winning trumpeter Bobby Shew will rehearse with each band and critique their performances as part of the Jazz Festival on Friday.

Shew’s diversity has made him the consummate performer. He has arranged, performed and recorded with artists as diverse as his career, including The Eurythmics, Rod Stewart, Lyle Lovett, Heart, Linda Ronstadt, Luther Vandross, Aaron Neville, The Brothers Johnson, Phish, Little Feat, Al Green, Quincy Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Peter Frampton, Josh Groban, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Celine Dion and many more. A musical travelogue has earned him Grammy Awards, and Grammy and Emmy award nominations as well as an International Broadcasting Award from The Hollywood Radio and Television Society.

The festival continues with evening performances, beginning at 8 p.m, April 4 with the Randy Runyon Trio, of Randy Runyon Jr. on guitar, Zak Croxall on bass and Tom Hartman on drums, and beginning at 8 p.m., April 5 with Shew performing with the Charles County Public School All-County Jazz Band, Solid Brass Big Band Jazz Ensemble and the Randy Runyon Trio.

Runyon, a former resident of La Plata, began playing guitar at age 11. He has performed with David Sanborn, James Genus, Gil Goldstein and Bernard Purdie (BeanTown Jazz Festival), Terri Lyne Carrington (Blue Note, New York City and Tokyo) and the Iridium (New York City) and with Tiger Okoshi (Kimmel Center, Philadelphia and Sapporo Jazz Festival, Japan), as well as with Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano and Mark Walker.

Runyon’s fall 2009 album, “Randy Runyon Animal Zoo,” features all original compositions influenced by a combination of jazz, funk, R&B, Hip Hop, rock, classical and psychedelic elements, he has successfully created his very own unique niche with Zak Croxall on bass, Tom Hartman on drums, Jeremy Vovcsko on sax and special guests Dennis Chambers, Mike Pope and Carl Filipiak.
