CSM Golfers Make the Cut at National Championship

CSM sophomore Kyle Carranza of Leonardtown is tied for second following the first day of competition at the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II men’s national golf tournament.

Student Athlete Ties for Second Following 1st Round

Members of the College of Southern Maryland golf team finished their season with a trip to Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala., May 17 through 20 for the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II men’s national golf tournament.

CSM sophomore Kyle Carranza of Leonardtown, a graduate of Great Mills High School, shot a 1-under-par 71 on day-one landing him in a tie for second place overall in a field of 127 players. Carranza’s low score in regular season play was 72. He entered the national championships ranked 52nd with a 75.667 average score.

As a freshman, Carranza qualified for the 2010 National Championship in Phoenix with a second place finish at the regionals before placing 87th nationally. He repeated his second place rank at regional competition this spring.

Tyler Logan of La Plata ranked 183rd with an 80.667 average score entering the national championships. He shot a 76 on day-one, placing him in a tie for 35th place. Walt Wiseman of Upper Marlboro  who ranked 199th with a 81.333 average score entering the nationals, shot an 81 on day-one and is tied for 97th place.
