The College of Southern Maryland Foundation will host its 3rd Annual Veterans and Law Enforcement Golf Tournament, May 9, at the Cedar Point Golf Course, NAS Patuxent River.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the Veterans Educational Endowment Fund. The tournament was the vision of Col. Thomas Tim Hutchins. I wanted to provide scholarships to veterans of the armed forces who major in law enforcement, homeland security or criminal justice at CSM, said Hutchins. Veterans have given for their country in far away places such as Iraq and Afghanistan and this scholarship is an opportunity to give back to them, he continued.
The scholarships first recipient was 29-year-old Jay McKeown, of La Plata. McKeown served for five years in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to Iraq, before becoming a criminal justice major at CSM. He continues to serve through the Army Reserves 11th PSYOP Division in Upper Marlboro.
Since its inception, the Veterans and Law Enforcement Golf Tournament has raised over $60,000 to support the academic goals of women and men returning from service in the armed forces. Hutchins is looking forward to this years tournament. The goal each year is to increase the number of scholarship recipients, and to include the previous years winner to insure they have the financial support needed to complete their program, Hutchins said.
The Veterans and Law Enforcement Scholarship Program is an important example of how the CSM Foundation and its donors are working to address the workforce shortage issues that our community is dealing with. By supporting students with scholarships in criminal justice, we are developing a pipeline of officers for the future. This tournament is a way to raise awareness and funds in support of the scholarship program, said Jane Loughran, CSMs development director.
Sponsorships at various giving levels, including foursome teams, are still available, according to Loughran. Individual golfers are also invited to join the tournament at $150 per golfer. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
