CSM Celebrates Concerts, Events Throughout December

Dance, Music Programs Begin Dec. 2

The College of Southern Maryland will present special concerts and events from holiday-themed performances to student recitals and community concerts to celebrate the season at its three campuses throughout December.

CSM’s Dance Ensemble will present its production, “Winter Wonderland,” Dec. 2 with a variety of pieces that will appeal to all lovers of dance. CSM’s dancers range from credit students on the path to professional dance careers to community members with strong regional experiences in dance studios and theaters.

CSM’s Music Department will present a music student honors recital, Dec. 5. Performances will feature a variety of styles, from classical instrumental to contemporary vocal and guitar performances. “The background of the student performers is quite diverse,” said CSM Professor and Coordinator of Music Dr. Stephen Johnson. “The directors of the ensembles and private instructors supporting the ensembles are very good at inspiring the students to do the best possible work in their performing.”

CSM’s Chorale will perform its seasonal concert Dec. 5 and 12 under the direction of CSM Professor Krystal McCoy. The Chorale is a mix of women’s and men’s voices performing in a variety of styles. “The students this semester are incredibly dedicated to choral singing and bring their experiences from previous choral groups, which makes Chorale strong and diversified,” said McCoy. “There will be three student conductors this semester, four small ensemble performances, and soloists represented.” December’s concert features a cappella arrangements of Deke Sharon, who has arranged music for the NBC program “The Sing-Off.”

Southern Mix, a men’s barbershop chorus directed by Paul Douglass, rehearses at CSM’s La Plata Campus, and will show off a long-standing tradition of humor in barbershop singing as it performs a show of “Harmonic Schtick” on Dec. 6.

CSM’s Ritmo Cache will present a Latin Concert on Dec. 7 directed by Johnson. Ritmo Cache specializes in Salsa, Mexican, Afro-Cuban, Merengue, Latin Jazz and other musical styles of Latin America. “The concert ties in with the Vietnam War Commemoration by offering an evening of protest songs and songs from the 1960s,” said Johnson. In addition to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, the December concert will include Salsa and Latin Jazz music. 

CSM will host the United States Air Force jazz ensemble, the Airmen of Note, in a free concert Dec. 12. The “Note,” featuring 18 jazz musicians, has earned an international reputation as one of the finest and most versatile big bands in the world. Arranged by Master Sergeant Alan Baylock, the band celebrated 60 and continues to perform for audiences throughout the United States and around the world.

CSM’s Jazz Ensemble, Solid Brass, will perform a mixture of traditional, contemporary and holiday songs on Dec. 9 and 13. Solid Brass is comprised of CSM students, local high school students, community members and professional musicians.

Performances at the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata, include “Winter Wonderland” at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2; Music Student Honors Recitals at 2:30 p.m. and CSM’s Chorale Seasonal Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5; Southern Mix at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6; Ritmo Cache at 8 p.m. on Dec. 7; Airmen of Note at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 12; and Solid Brass at 8 p.m. on Dec. 13.

Solid Brass will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Dec.9 in the Multipurpose Room of Building B on the Prince Frederick Campus, 115 J.W. Williams Road, Prince Frederick.

The Chorale will perform in the Auditorium of Building A on the Leonardtown Campus, 22950 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 12.

Music Student Honors Recitals are free to the public. All other performance tickets are $5 in advance, $7 the day of the concert.

CSM Music Ensemble: Music Student Honors Recitals. 2:30 p.m., Dec. 5, College of Southern Maryland, Fine Arts Center, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. Each semester, CSM’s private instructors in music select their best student musicians to perform in a public recital. Any students taking private lessons for credit who have been approved by their instructors are eligible to perform. These recitals feature a variety of styles from classical instrumental and vocal solos to contemporary vocal and guitar performances and represent the highest level of musicianship in the respective studios.
