Assistant Producer at WAVA, CSM Alumnus Tony Penny to Address CSM’s Spring Graduates

The College of Southern Maryland will celebrate its 56th spring commencement at the La Plata Campus on May 21 with the keynote address to be provided by WAVA Assistant Producer Tony Penny.

Penny is the special assistant to Dr. David Anderson, CEO of the diversity consulting firm The BridgeLeader Network and the founder and senior pastor of Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia, Maryland. Penny serves as the assistant producer of Anderson’s “Real Talk with Dr. David Anderson” radio show.

As a member of BridgeLeader Network, Penny taught and facilitated discussion on the principles of racial reconciliation and multicultural effectiveness in Kenya, throughout the Middle East, New York City, Los Angeles, Ferguson, Missouri, and most recently, in Baltimore.

In addition to Penny’s work in radio, he is an award-winning voiceover talent whose clients have included Ralph Lauren, Honda, General Electric and Verizon Wireless. He has provided voice characterizations and narrated dozens of audiobooks in various genres including self-help, Marvel graphic novels and memoirs. He is recipient of the Publisher’s Weekly Listen Up Award.

Penny served as a U.S. Marine Corps reservist from 1986 to 1994 and was stationed in California, Hawaii, Mississippi and Louisiana while on reserve duty at Andrews Air Force Base.

Penny earned an associate degree in general studies from CSM and a bachelor’s degree in communications with a specialty in public relations from Towson University.

A graduate of Henry E. Lackey High School, Penny served as senior class vice president, student representative to the Charles County Board of Education and the Maryland State president of the Future Business Leaders of America.

Penny lives outside of Baltimore with his wife and their twin 10-year-olds.

CSM’s spring commencement activities will begin with an Honors Convocation at 6 p.m. on May 20 on the Administration (AD) lawn. A nurses’ recognition program begins at 1 p.m., May 21 in the Physical Education (PE) Building, with a reception immediately following on the upper level. The college’s commencement ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. May 21 on the AD lawn. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Center for Business and Industry (BI) Building, Chaney Enterprises Conference Room, BI-113. Rain location for Honors Convocation and Commencement is the PE Building and tickets are required. Students have been provided tickets for guests to use in the event of inclement weather.

The safety of CSM students, guests and employees is of utmost importance. All individuals may be subject to bag checks before entry. CSM Public Safety officials encourage guests to leave large secondary bags, diaper bags and backpacks in their vehicles or at home as these will be subject to the bag check process.
