CSM Presents Blue Mountain Ensemble, May 3

The Blue Mountain Ensemble will perform the last of the Ward Virts 2014-15 Concert Series at the College of Southern Maryland on May 3.

The College of Southern Maryland will host the final 2014-15 Ward Virts Concert Series event with a performance by the Blue Mountain Ensemble beginning at 3 p.m., May 3, on the Prince Frederick Campus, 115 J.W. Williams Road, Prince Frederick in the Multipurpose Room of Building B.

Featuring Michael Burns on bassoon and Carla Copeland-Burns on flute, the Blue Mountain Ensemble performs music from diverse periods written for flute, bassoon and piano. The group actively explores and develops new works that include other instruments or voices, particularly percussion.

With a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Burns is a Yamaha Performing Artist as well as a professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). As a solo, chamber and orchestral musician, he performs regularly with the North Carolina, Greensboro and Charlotte symphonies. In addition, he is a composer and many of his pieces have been published by TrevCo Music, Potenza Music and Effiny Music.

With a Master’s of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, Copeland-Burns is an instructor of flute at UNCG and a guest artist-teacher at the New Zealand School of Music, Auckland University and Florida State University. She performs with the Greensboro, Salisbury and North Carolina symphonies as well as the North Carolina Opera Orchestra, Carolina Ballet Orchestra and the Mallarmé Chamber Players.

The Ward Virts Concert Series is presented by sponsors Dr. and Mrs. Henry Virts, Edward and Patricia Mehosky, The Southern Maryland Chain Chapter of The Links, Inc., Stovy and Anne Brown, Exelon Generation-Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and the CSM Foundation.
